Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital adheres to Correct Site Surgery Policies, and strives to ensure correct patient and site surgery standards are followed. Several staff members will ask you to identify yourself, verify the correct spelling of your name, and verify the planned procedure. This will be done several times while you are with us, so please be patient and remember that we are doing this to ensure your safety.
PRE-OPERATIVE ADMITTING AREA
After you have been registered, you will be escorted, along with your caregiver(s) to one of our pre-operative rooms. During this time, a nurse will review any guidelines with you, as well as prepare you for surgery. You will also be asked to mark your operative site. You will also talk with a member of the anesthesiology health care team. We encourage you to prepare ahead of time any questions you may want to ask.
We will provide you with a patient gown, robe and slippers. An anesthesiology staff member will meet with you to discuss the type of anesthesia you will have.
Occasionally, surgery may be delayed due to circumstances beyond our control. Should delays occur, we will keep you informed.
DURING SURGERY
After you have met with all the appropriate members of the health care team, you will be brought back to the operating room. Your caregivers will be taken to the visitor waiting area during surgery. We encourage all caregivers to remain in the visitor waiting area during surgery in case the surgeon, nurse or anesthesiologist needs to contact them. If they do need to leave, be prepared to leave contact information at the front desk. When the surgery is complete, the surgeon will meet with your caregivers in the consult room to discuss how the surgery went.
AFTER SURGERY
After surgery you will be taken to post-anesthesia care unit for observation and recovery. Your caregiver will be informed of your progress. Your recovery depends on what kind of surgery you have and your general state of health. Our nurses will explain your individual recovery course to you and your caregiver.
Home instructions will be given to you prior to your discharge. You will need to have a responsible adult available to hear your discharge instructions.
You will receive a follow-up call on the next business day from a Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital nurse regarding your recovery process. If you have any immediate needs or concerns, please call your surgeon.
